How to Protect your Child’s Teeth this Christmas

What we eat will always affect the health of our teeth. Children can be particularly susceptible to consuming foods and drinks that hurt the development of healthy teeth and gums. During December, cakes, cookies, and sweet treats seem to go hand in hand with celebrating Christmas. The most valuable thing you can do for your child’s dental health has the patience to teach them proper food choices. Here are some kid-friendly foods for your child along with other healthy teeth tips.

  • Vegetables and fruits: Fruits are particularly helpful in staving off a sweet tooth. Oranges, strawberries, melons, berries, and pears pack a tasty and nutritional punch that will leave your child satisfied instead of hyped up on unhealthy sugars. If your child does eat candy, teach them to brush soon after to get rid of any stickiness or residue, which can cause tooth decay.
  • Cheese: For a satisfying snack after school, have whole grain crackers and cheese at the ready. Cheeses like Monterey Jack, Swiss, and other aged cheeses prompt the production of saliva. Saliva helps wash miniscule food particles off of teeth.

Serve sweets right after dinner

If you plan on letting your child eat sweets, do so right after dinner. Around mealtime, there is typically an increased amount of saliva in the mouth. This will help wash away sugary substances from the teeth.

Cut out the sugary drinks

Sugar-packed drinks are one of the easiest ways to down huge amounts of sugar and empty calories. Instead of offering your child fruit juice or soda, start making water your family’s go-to drink.

Don’t forget the calcium

Foods like milk, broccoli, and yogurt are excellent sources of calcium, which is needed to build strong teeth.
