Can you catch a cavity under the mistletoe?
The holiday season is full of opportunities to gather together with friends and family, but if you are caught under the mistletoe, are you at risk for catching a cavity?
Both cavities and gum disease are caused by bacteria in the mouth. One study showed that up to 80 million bacteria can be transferred during an “intimate mistletoe moment.” Although a one-time smooch under the mistletoe is unlike to radically change your oral microbiome, research has shown that partners often share similarities in their bacteria strains.
If your partner has aggressive strains of bacteria, you can “catch a cavity or gum disease” from your partner. Clearly, there is something to be said about encouraging your partner to go see the dentist regularly.
